I learned a handful of knowledge from Tavernello Lambrusco Emilia.

  • For starters, seing the word Lambrusco doesn’t automatically make it a sweet wine.

I have no idea where I got my assumption, but before I picked this wine up I thought Lambrusco indicates high sweetness in wine. After a bit of Googling, I found out that Lambrusco is just another grape variety like merlot, pinot noir, and shiraz.

  • Emilia” refers to Emilia-Romagna, a region in Italy where Lambrusco grapes are harvested from.
  • For Italian wines such as Tavernello, “amabile” is the word to watch out for sweet or off-dry wines. For the very sweet ones, it’s “dolce“. Repeating this to myself for a hundred times now. On the other hand, dry wines are indicated by the word “secco“.

Anyway, back to Tavernello Lambrusco Emilia Amabile Rosso. Whew, that’s a mouthful. Prepare for a huge pop once you pull the cork out. It’s a vino frizzante (sparkling wine) after all. All the trapped gases are raring to come out.

I had high hopes that it would be as good sweet as my favorite, Wild Vines, but it wasn’t. It’s a sweet red wine alright but it’s dialled three levels down. It’s also a bit dry, leaving a slight bitter finish behind.

But to my surprise, I wasn’t disappointed at all. Unlike Fortunella Premium Sweet Red Wine, there’s no vinegary factor. It’s sweet, then it’s dry. That’s it. No sourness in the middle which is great. And true to it’s back label description, it’s mellow. Think of watered-down strong, alcohol-laden sweet red wine. It’s very light, and it would probably take more than a glass to warm your body up.

Tavernello Lambrusco Emilia Amabile Rosso is great for drinkers who are in the middle, those who like wines that aren’t too sweet nor too dry. And for it’s price, it’s a nice find. It’s easy to sweeten up too if you want. Add a few glugs of cranberry juice and it would be perfect.
