I’ve never been a fan of Jollibee’s Burger Steak. The first time I tried it, many years ago when I was still in college, I though it was a huge cop-out, a lazy excuse for a new product.

The patty? That’s not new. We get that every time we order a Yum burger.

The gravy? That’s not new, either. It comes with every Chicken Joy.

The mushrooms? Sure but would a few slices of button mushrooms make a significant difference?

Me and the Classic Burger Steak

I’ve never understood why most of my friends love it and even crave for it at times. Never. Until a few months ago, when I had no choice but to eat the free lunch provided at one of our company events. Guess what the office got us? Jollibee’s Burger Steak meal.

So, It was either I make do with it or go through the hassle of heading out, finding a place to eat, and shelling out an extra hundred or more unnecessarily. I decided to stay, consoling myself I won’t die if I eat it. After all Jollibee’s burger steak isn’t inedible. I just don’t like it.

I had the second Jollibee burger steak of my life that day, and surprisingly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. After years of shunning Jollibee’s burger steak, I understood what burger steak fans love about it. The patty is juicy, the gravy is tasty, and the mushroom slices is a succulent add-on. All in all, it’s a subtle but flavorful dish. I even realized that what I have towards burger steak is a genuine “It’s not you; it’s me” situation.

Now where did the hate come from?

My personal bias got in the way. I loved flavors that pop (I still do), and I was quick to dismiss the “subtle” flavor as bland.

But that’s before. My taste buds have “matured”, and I’ve started appreciating “subtle” flavors more. For instance, I no longer whince when someone orders carbonara instead of bolognese. I sometimes find myself wanting Sbarro’s Chicago White instead of my favorite, Chicago Deep Dish . And I don’t mind having a not-so-sweet bowl of oatmeal for breakfast anymore.

Despite all that, I’m still not a fan of the Classic Burger Steak though but that’s because of my personal preference in food. However, I’ve changed my mind about it. It’s NOT a lousy product. It’s just not for me.

Jollibee’s New Sweet-Spicy BBQ Burger Steak – Yummy!

On a more excited note, I’m singing a different tune when it comes to Jollibee’s newest addition: the Sweet-Spicy BBQ Burger Steak. It’s not smothered in gravy. It’s not topped with mushrooms. Instead, the patty is drenched in a sweet, smokey, peppery sauce and crowned with corn kernels. Flecked with spices, the sauce is a delightful blend of sweet-chili and savory barbecue sauce. It has a slight kick, a 2 in a scale of 1 to 10. The corn kernels on the other hand lend a slight crunch.

The classic wasn’t for me but this — Jollibee’s Sweet-Spicy BBQ Burger Steak — definitely is. It has “flavors that pop.”  It’s easy on the pocket, too. The 1-pc meal costs P55 while the 2-pc meal costs P85. If you want it ala carte, it’s P50 and and P80, respectively. I hope it’s on the menu for keeps.

Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
